Director
The Talmudic Encyclopedia
Jerusalem.
Dear Rabbi Steinberg,
We have received, with immense gratitude and appreciation, your stated intention to publish a special edition of the “War” entry and to dedicate it to the memory of our beloved Aluf Mishne (Col.) Yehonatan Steinberg HY”D, Commander of the Nahal Brigade, who fell on Shabbat Simchat Torah 5784 and in honor of the soldiers of the Nahal Brigade.
Yehonatan combined in his unique and principled manner, the values of “safra v’saifa” – the book and the sword. He knew how to instill in his subordinates the love of the land, the love of Klal Yisrael and the belief in the justice of our path in our war for our dear land.
His modesty and his unique personality in combination with his great military professionalism and knowledge of the intricacies of combat doctrine, made him esteemed in the eyes of the upper military echelon who predicted a bright future for him.
This edition of the "War" entry in the Talmudic Encyclopedia gives expression to the integration of values demonstrated by Yoni and his soldiers.
Yoni HY”D, bequeathed to all of us the perspective of a military man steeped in Torah scholarship and Jewish morality who was a true embodiment of the combination of Safra and Saifa.
We are humbly grateful for that.
With gratitude,
The Steinberg and Emanuel Families
